Research interests: Overconfidence, Metacognition, Judgment and decision making, Calibration, Self-censorship, Social influence, Social cognition, Collective judgment,
Generally speaking, my research examines miscalibration—how accurately people understand themselves and their social worlds—and how these perceptions shape their judgments, decisions, and social interactions.
These interests have led me to research overconfidence and self-censorship, two phenomena that illustrate these misperceptions.
Featured Publications:
Binnendyk, J., Li, S., Costello, T., Hale, R., Moore, D. A., & Pennycook, G. (2025). Is overconfidence a trait? An adversarial collaboration. Psychological Science
- In this paper, we examined whether conceptual overconfidence across different tasks (from guessing the suits of randomly drawn cards to predicting whether someone has an innie or outtie bellybutton) was related, suggesting a general underlying trait. We found that, regardless of the task, people who were overconfident on one task were more likely to be overconfident on another.
This paper received the Significant Paper Award: Cornell University Department of Psychology.
Binnendyk, J., & Pennycook, G. (2024). Individual differences in overconfidence: A new measurement approach. Judgment and Decision Making
- We challenge traditional methods for measuring overconfidence and propose a novel approach called the Generalized Overconfidence Task (GOT). The GOT addresses a key limitation of traditional measures: estimates of overconfidence are confounded with differences in ability. Using this approach, we demonstrate that individual differences in overconfidence emerge once you account for differences in ability.*
